Gloria Gaynor (born Gloria Fowles on September 7, 1949 in Newark, New Jersey), now living in Green Brook, New Jersey, is an American singer, best-known for the disco era hits; "I Will Survive", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "Let Me Know (I Have a Right)" and "I Am What I Am". "I Will Survive" is a song first performed by Gloria Gaynor, released in October 1978 and it has often been used as an anthem of female empowerment, gay empowerment and HIV/AIDS awareness. It is one of the most famous disco songs of all time and Gaynor's biggest hit. It received massive airplay in 1979, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It received the Grammy Award for Best Disco Recording in 1980, the only year that the award was given. The Song was also listed at #97 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of all time. In 2000 the song was ranked #1 in VH1's list of the 100 greatest dance songs.
